Thyroid is an endocrine gland secreting hormone necessary for vital functions of the body.The hormone secreted by it is Thyroxine, Triodothyronine, Thyroid stimulating hormone.

The 4 tests used to detect thyroid problems are

• Blood test:T3 (Triodothyronine)T4 (Thyroxine )TSH( Thyroid stimulating hormone )
• Iodine uptake test or Iodide uptake test
• T3 resin uptake test
• USG thyroid

Blood Test

Preparation of the patients

A thyroid test are usually done in a fasting of 12 hours ,early in the morning in empty stomach

Test determines

The TSH levels are increased when there is hypothyroidism

If T4 levels are increased it is hyperthyroidism a and vice versa

If T3 levels are decreased in case of hypothyroidism

Iodide uptake test

Preparation :

• Patient are give a radioactive capsules to swallow 4 hours before procedure ,the medicine acts in 4 _6 hours .If not capsules then a radioactive solution is given to drink which is colorless or tasteless for four hours
• Patient shoukdnot eat or drink anything before two hours of procedure
• Remove all the ornaments used above the waist level (jewels,metal hair clips,eating, nevk chain )
• Tie the patient hair or put on a top knot and if needed a surgical cap to avoid interference during procedure
• Check patient for any iodine allergy before administration
• Get consent as per the hospital protocol
• Check patients vital parameters

Test determines

It determines the presence of iodine in the thyroid gland. The amount of uptake in the gland is dine by a thyroid gland.If the entire nodules is filled with iodine it determines the entire thyroid gland is affected

It determines the presence of hypothyroidism

T3 resin uptake test

Preparation :

• No special preparation is required
• Inform and get advice if taking antiseizure ,steroids or birth control pills.
• It is a blood test taken via vein so a short sleeve will be ideal to draw blood

Test determines.

It is done to assess the thyroid dysfunction, can diagnose whether it is hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism .It identifies the binding capacity of the Thyroxine binding globulin.A low level may also indicate kidney dysfunction and a high level suggests estrogen or hormone replacement therapy ,obesity,pregnancy.

• Neck to be exposed
• Removal of any ornaments

Test determines

Here radiation or waves are passed in to the thyroid gland and the abnormalities are detected.It is useful in detecting any nodules,growth.It is easy to identify goitre.
