Cadaveric donation is not a primary source of organ and tissue donation . Organs are procured from persons who have DIED.
These organs may be obtained from:
-Persons who have suffered a recent - in the last 30 minutes -cardiac arrest-> usually as a result of traumatic injury to the brain in which other body parts were NOT harmed
Ex.) A gunshot
-Persons who have sustained a NON-recoverable brain injury but have not actually died
>Under a very specific and rigorous protocol these people may be taken to the OR, disconnected from life support, and diagnosed as DEAD
-Persons who have been determined to be dead based on NEUROLOGIC (rather than cardiac) criteria ("brain dead")
