Symbolism:
White elephant:
This story about an American man and girl about their unplanned pregnancy. On the way to Hemingway represents the scenery play a major role in this story. while they waiting for a train the ongoing conversation whether to have a baby or not. Hills and fields surrounding the train station tell about the couple's situation. The girl says the hills as a white elephant as a girls skin and growing belly. The man replies he has never seen one. They were clearly talking about something, a white elephant is very rare and it has auspicious meaning.
Elephant in the room:
American man thinks that the girl pregnancy is not a gift and he is not willing to receive it. Heming way introduces the light and dark in this story.
Railway station:
The railway station in the lovely place reflects the girls' loneliness and isolation. She feels difficulty in facing this situation. Here American men and girls discuss their next stage of life journey.
Alcohol:
To stop the conversation they order the alcohol, which is bad during pregnancy.
Beaded curtain:
In the bar, there was a beaded curtain the girl think that as a rosary and seeking for some emotional support and asking for forgiveness for the sin.
Landscape:
On the way to Hemingway, the outside of the track has no shades and no trees. Otherside there were fields of grain and trees. This contrast between barren and fertile land. This symbolizes the ultimate outcomes of the decision which girl faces whether to have abortion or not.
