Topic is on smoking, answer the following;

  1. Why is the selected health behavior (smoking) important and how does it negatively impact different body systems (include illnesses/conditions/disease that comes from smoking.
  2. conduct a brief interview with an individual who has experienced this health behavior (smoking) and ask about the barriers or difficulties that may have experienced in trying to change or maintain in smoking? What do you think are the biggest (health risks) or (health benefits) due to health behavior (smoking). I don't know anyone who smokes so I can make up the responses for the interview.

Selection of the topic smoking today is very important for the purpose of any kind of health education, survey or interview. It is so because smoking has been one of the most common trend and fashion which has been famous in today's world . Smoking now has become common in all the age groups starting from children to old age group.

In various developing countries like India , Nepal , Sri Lanka etc we can observe various age group children taking cigarettes in their hands. It is very important to make an awareness regarding this topic in people and tell them about its impact on their health.

Smoking cigarette causes various negative impact on our health and body systems. It mainly affects our respiratory system. In a survey done in united states smoking has caused almost 90% of deaths due to lung cancer including women. It increases the risk of getting coronary heart disease, stroke, lung cancer etc. The smoking not only affects the person doing it but also the person who is inhaling the smoke coming out of the cigarette. It increases the narrowing of the blood vessels and thickening of the intima, also it makes the heart beat faster and increases the blood pressure which may lead to blood clot which ultimately leads to various body system blockage including brain and may lead to severe brain damages and conditions such as stroke.

Interview:

One of my friend has been smoking since 8-9 years and is a moderate smoker where he smokes for 3 times a day either one at a time or sometimes it may reach up to 3-5 sticks at one time.

1. Since how long have you been smoking?

- since 8-9 years started when I was 17yrs old.

2. How did you start smoking?

- I started smoking because of the peer pressure. All my friends were smoking and I was tempted towards it.

3. Have you found any kind of changes in your health after you started smoking?

- at first I used to have difficulty in breathing but slowly I got adjusted to it. I even used to coming for several times during the starting but then it became all right.

4. Now do you think you have any kind of effect because of smoking?

- sometimes I get cough and chest pains but I am not sure if it is because of my smoking.

5. Do you have any other problems related to other body systems?

- I get gastritis if I smoke in empty stomach and my head starts spinning so usually I avoid taking smoke in an empty stomach.

6. How has your life been affected by smoking?

- nothing has been affected except for the money problem. As I am a student I get money from my parents and have a very tight budget so I always increase the amount of my monthly expenses and tell my parents that this and that has been increased so to get more money for buying cigarettes.

7. Have you tried quitting your smoking habit?

- yes I have tried 2-3 times but it was a fail. I get urge to smoke so many times, I feel like biting myself and can't control my urge

8. What do you think will happen to you if you continue to smoke cigarettes?

- I think I might get lung cancer or stomach cancer because I get stomach aches often and it mainly affects my stomach.

9. Have you planned on quitting smoking?

- yes once I get married I am planning to quit on smoking and this time I will take help of doctors or psychiatrist to quit my this habit.
