The increasing health care facilities and patient needs increased the demand of nursing professionals. The nursing roles are also evolving according to the changing system of health care. The challenging roles played by nurses such as working autonomously, applying evidence based care practices, decision making managers, etc. require the corresponding changes in the curriculum.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are the Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) who are clinical experts with a master’s degree and trained to provide health care through taking health histories, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health care conditions. Nurse practitioners also do specialization in specific areas such as cardiology, gerontology, oncology and many other.

Depending upon their specialization, NPs serve as primary health care providers and treat patients of all gender and age groups. The care provided by NPs lead to enhanced patient satisfaction and expected clinical outcomes. NPs can perform physical examination, interpret the diagnostic results such as ECGs (electrocardiograms), and also prescribe medications whenever necessary during the clinical practice. NPs are directly involved in the implementation of the evidence based practice (EBP), while the nurse educators are involved in acquiring necessary knowledge regarding EBP.
