Should patients be allowed to decide whether their records are kept on computer or on paper?

Computer based health records are repository of electronically maintained information about an individualand 's life time health status and health care, stored so that it can serve multiple legitimate users.

It is an integration of patient information system that captures and stores demographic, financial and medical information from ancillary services like registration, billing, lab, radiology pathology, pharmacy etc.

It also includes the network that links these systems databases, interfaces, physician order entry, electronic communications and clinical workstation.

It has better accessibility than paper record. Better legible and organised input process with interactive control of completeness and accuracy along with reusability of data for future use.

They are not simply automated as today's paper records. Instead they contain patient information, decision support, reference material and payer information. It provides protection of patient and provider confidentiality. Vocabulary and standardized coding produces documentation as a by-product of patient care, connects remote and local systems. There by improves quality of care.

Hence the coding system of computer ensures the confidentiality of patient information on the computer and cause no harm to Individuals. So patients of Dr. Thomas no need to confuse in deciding whether their records are kept on computer or on paper. As, it is clear paper may be lost and medical data is not permanent but computer based records are permanent and can be reviewed in future .
