Hepatitis B vaccine is used used to prevent hepatitis B infection which is one of major cause of liver cancer.
The Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for infants and adults by the age if 19 years.
The dosing schedule includes first dose at the time of birth, second dose after 1 month of first dose and a third dose to be given 4 months after the first dose.
In adults the dosing schedule consists of two dose with a gap of one month in between.
Medical effectiveness:
The hepatitis B vaccine is one of the most effective and safest way to prevent hepatitis B. It does not cause any dangerous effects to the infants and one cannot get hepatitis B from vaccine as it is synthetic.
The WHO recommends hepatitis B vaccine for people following :
1. Infants
2. sexual partners of hepatitis B-positive
3. Sexually active people with multiple partners
4. Patients with STD
5. People having partners of same gender
6. Healthcare workers
7. People with end stage renal disease
8. People with chronic liver disease
9. Hepatitis C infection
10. Diabetic patients
Medication administration :
The hepatitis B vaccine is given though an intramuscular injection.

Nursing intervention and client education :
1. The first and foremost role of a nurse is to educate the parents of newly born and susceptible patients about the importance of hepatitis B vaccine. The nurse needs to educate patient about Hepatitis B infection, its consequences and effects on health.
2. Ensure the patient that there are no harmful side effects of the vaccine and they will not have the disease through vaccine.
3.The nurse needs to make the patient receiving hepatitis B vaccine understand full immunization schedule and emphasis on taking timely dosage and not missing his shots.
4. Make patient about the local side effects of vaccine like pain, swelling, redness and ways to manage the symptoms.
