Part I: Formulate a Research Question

Your book discusses coming up with a question to guide your research rather than coming up with a topic. Doing the first part of this exercise is easy. Come up with a question to research. Yours will be very similar to the example below:

Should I continue on my current career path, which is to become a nurse, or change?

If you are not planning to become a nurse, you would substitute your career path for the one in the example. That is the first part.

Part II: Come up with Three Criteria

Now that you have your research question, you will need three criteria to determine if you should stay on your current career path or not. A criterion is a standard on which something can be judged. For instance, if you were deciding which month you should get married, you might consider the weather for that month. That is a criterion. The plural of "criterion" is "criteria."

Here's how to choose three criteria:

1) Brainstorm some possible topics that you can use.

List some considerations that you could use to decide if your current career path is a good one for you or not. Some of these could be

* salary

* employability

* benefits

* work environment

* colleagues

* work hours

* advancement opportunities

* commute

* job location

* education required

and more. You may choose from some of those that I have listed, but you are not limited to them.
