what can the nurse do to assist with eating for patients with visual deficits?
ANS) At first we can say that the safe keeping of patients with the visual deficits should be attentively individualised, while encouraging the patient to bring to a normal condition.Good and better communication and accepting their words are also very important while taking care of a patient with visual deficits, because the individuals with the visual deficits are also an human being and they are also having the same standard of requirements and emotions as a individual who is having usual vision.
The notable biological and physiological requirements of peoples with the visual deficits are those related with the eating and drinking. The level of visual deficit will decide what kind or what level of assistance is needed with eating and drinking, better practice include finding out the patients usual mealtime. For example,we can ask the patient that where to keep their things like plates, cups, cutlery etc.So by doing this,it is easy for the patients to use their items used for having food.
The nurses can recommend the patients to use the hands of clock method,so the patients can have their food at the correct time by touching the hands of clock. For example, at 9 am breakfast,at 1 pm lunch etc.. .Cutting the food items into small pieces before their meals can provide a ease in having the food.
Avoid the complete filling of hot drinks in the cups, this will avoid the burning of mouth and also the lips. The amount of fluid present in the cup or glass should be shown to the patient. The opportunities for washing the hands of patients should be there before and after having the food.So we can say that the evaluation of present treatment and dietary requirements are very important.
