Answer 1.

The state or quality of being independent is called independence. It refers to freedom from dependence , self subsistence or maintenance .

The best way to assist a person towards independence is to provide support not to control. By providing support a carer ( health care provider or a family member) can empower a a disabled person to be independent and it will help to develop a sense of self determination in them.

For example: Carer can ask the patient in a certain situation ' what you would like to do ' instead ' what to do' or for lunch ask him what is his choice and ask him to take lead role in preparing it by providing all necessary things to him, in his access and support or assist him.

Controling will lead to restrictions and it may decrease the disabled person's feelings to make indenpendent choices.

For example:instead of asking him what he likes to have ( if there is no food restrictions), provide food of carer's choice.

Building confidence and make him to do choices other than controling will greatly help a person to become independent. Avoid negativity and hopelessness in the words of carer, make a support group for the client from family members and neighbours or friends, allow life choices, encourage communication with Community groups and out siders. Moreover appreciate and reinforce them while they are trying to do physical activities by themselves. Provide with all necessary things and materials ( self adjusting wheel chairs, electric bed etc.)
