The Tachyglossidae are also known as echidna. The echidnas having short beak mainly depend on ants and grubs for food. Echidnas usually dig up the soil to find ants, they tore the logs to obtain termites. Apart from short beaked echidna, long beaked echidna depends on earthworm for their food.
The three adaptations are:
1. Behavioural adaptations: echidna use their fast tounges to eat ants and they use their forepaws to dig the soil area to find ants.
2. Structural adaptations: Echidnas possess sharp and long tounges for trapping ants and termites. And have spines all over body.
3. Physiological adaptation: they lay a single egg.
The epipubic bones helps in stiffening of the trunk and also helps in breathing. The other secondary functions include providing support to the mother's pouch and supporting other muscles.
