Immobility refers to the state of not being able to move around. Long periods of immobility has an obvious effect on the musculoskeletal system.
Complications from immobility:
i. Reduced muscle mass
ii. Reduced muscle strength
iii. Muscles feel stiff and sore on movement
iv. Increased risk of edema
v. Changes in hormone balance
vi. Changes in sodium-water balance
vii. Risk of heartburn and indigestion
viii. Reduced appetite
ix. Weight loss
x. Decreased peristalsis
