Question

Three capacitors with capacitances C1 = 6.3 ?F, C2 = 1.1 ?F, and C3 = 4.3 ?F are connected in a circuit as shown in the figure, with an applied potential of V. After the charges on the capacitors have reached their equilibrium values, the charge Q2 on the second capacitor is found to be 55. ?C.

a) What is the charge, Q1, on capacitor C1?

b) What is the charge, Q3, on capacitor C3?

c) How much voltage, V, was applied across the capacitors?

Answer #1

Here ,

as the potential across the capacitors is same in parallel

Q1/C1 = Q2/C2

Q1/6.3 = 55/1.1

Q1 = 315 uC

b)

as the charge is same in series ,

Q3 = Q1 + Q2

Q3 = 315 + 55

Q3 = 370 uC

the charge on capacitor 3 is 370 uC

c)

NOw , voltage across capacitors

V = 370/4.3 + 315/6.3

V = 136.1 V

the potential across capacitors is 136.1 V
