Scenario:

Tanya Washington will finish her associate's degree nursing program in 6 weeks. Her preferred clinical area is pediatric oncology, and she hopes to become a pediatric nurse practitioner one day. Tanya has received two job offers, both from urban hospitals with large pediatric units. Because several of their friends are already employed by theses facilities, she asked them for their thoughts.

"Central Hospital is a good place to work," said one friend. "It is a dynamic, growing institution, always on the cutting edge of change. Any new idea that seems promising, Central is the first to try it. It's an exciting place to work."

"City Hospital is also a good place to work," said her other friend. "It is a strong, stable institution where traditions are valued. Any new idea must be carefully evaluated before it is adapted. It's been a pleasure to work there."

1.How would the organizational culture of each hospital affect a new graduate?
2.Which organizational culture do you think would be best for a new graduate, Central's or City's.
3.Would your answer differ in Tanya were and experienced nurse?
4.What else would you like to know about the two hospitals?

Answer #1

Nursing is more stressful, intense and seemed to be more technological than earlier. Upon this, pediatric nurses have to be more composed and skillful in the job environment. A research on turn over intent of new graduates and experienced nurses have revealed couple of points to consider.

One such point is the odds against turn over intent decreases in the new graduates if the social environment is conducive, and so it is very important to select the work environment with utmost care and introspection.

1.

New graduates have to adapt to the work environment. The application of theoretical knowledge begins here. In the USA, study programmes in pediatrics provide very less clinical experience. So, the young enthusiasts would like to explore all their ideas and would like to work with challenges. However, experienced nurses are preferred in a work environment. This is due to the fact that children require extremely complex care, which demands a high level of competency to meet social mandates for safety and quality. Central hospital can thus be challenging initially, but proper mentorship is needed to maintain the same.

City hospital values tradition and idease are carefully evaluated. This means there will be strict regulations to implement the new ideas. So, the new graduates have to plan meticulously which are further evaluated by experienced staff. Though, initially it may sound gloom due to the regulations, this is reasonable for developing and coping with the nursing environment.

2.

City hospital environment can eventually prove good for new graduates. There is strong check for the new theories and thus provides an opportunity to evolve better.

3.

My answer may differ with Tanya. Indeed, differences exist in thought processes among people.

4.

Additionally, it is appreciated to be aware of the following:

Work culture, pay, and help during the transition that includes guided clinical experiences, mentoring, one-to-one preceptorships, and classroom activities.
