A contractor plans to use a crawler tractor that is being used to move 5,000 BCY of soil 500 feet horizontally in a 50 minute working hour. The soil has a swell of 15%. The tractor has a straight blade 10 feet long and 4 feet high. The average width of the base of the soil pile in front of the blade has been measured to be about 5 feet. Assume that the tractor travels in first gear forward at 2.2 miles per hour and returns in a second reverse gear at 3.4 miles per hour. The total ownership and operating cost of the tractor is $55.00 per hour. Use a fixed time of 10 minutes. Remember that the tractor will be moving the dirt in its loose state. What is the total estimated cost of moving all of the dirt? Total Cost = Unit Cost X Total LCY to be moved
