Question

Slit Width The single slit diffraction pattern shown below was made with light with A 610 nm. The screen was 1.7 m from the slit, and the distance to the second minimum (indicated by the arrow) was 1.5 cm. What is the slit width in mm? Hint: The distance between the center of central maximum and the nthminimum for single slit diffraction is given by xn (nDA)/b. nJ2 in this case

Answer #1

minima for single slit diffraction :

d*sintheta = m*lambda

tan theta = y/D

theta is small so tantheta = sintheta

d*y/D = m*lambda

d = slit width

D = screen distance

y = minima fromcentral

m = 1 ,2 , 3 ...

lambda = wavelenght

d = m*lambda*D/y

m =2

d = 1.38 x 10^-4 m = 0.138 mm
