Question

POD24-Prob#2) Particle Physics-where collisions are everything One important way that the physics of collisions is used is in the study of particle physics-understanding matter at its most fundamental level. To do this, scientists look at trails left by particles after a collision, like the one shown to the right. Consider how this might work in a simple two particle collision- Lets say a proton (P1) is headed toward another proton (P2). The first proton has a velocity of 3.5x10sm/s. P2 is initially at rest. The collision is called glancing, since P1 heads off at an angle of 30.0degrees after hitting P2. If this is an elastic collision, find the angle that P2 makes (shown as (p in the figure below), and the speeds of P1 and P2 after the collision. This is how physicists are able to understand the trails left after particle collisions. Vf,P1 P1 After Vi,P1 30° P1 P2 P2 Before Vf,P2
