Cutaneous amebiasis is a very serious health problem in developing countries, resulting in painful ulcers. The ulcers are burdened with amoebae, which are comparatively effortless to see microscopically with routine stains.
A much characterized sign of Cutaneous amebiasis is Erythrophagocytosis.
Cutaneous amebiasis may also take place on the abdominal wall adjoining a strenuous hepatic abscess, colostomy site, or laparotomy cut.
Amebae reach the skin via two mechanisms: direct and indirect.
Amebae are able to reach the skin if there is a cut, providing the port for entry and if conditions in the patient are favorable.
On the other hand amoebae are able to destroy tissues by their physical activity & phagocytosis.
Furthermore Cutaneous amebiasis can be defined as damage to the skin & underlying soft tissues by trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica, the only pathogenic form for humans.
Cutaneous amebiasis may be the only phrase of the disease which may involve other organs, usually the gastrointestinal tract. But in some cases liver, lungs & especially the central nervous system may also be involved.
Other species of Entamoeba, such as Entamoeba hartmanni, Entamoeba coli, and Entamoeba gingivalis, are nonpathogenic.
Case study:
A four-month-old male infant from a rural area had developed cutaneous amebiasis of the perianal and genital areas in association with amebic dysentery. The diagnosis was based on the identification of Entamoeba histolytica by skin biopsy there was a huge lesion in his intestine, and during stool excretion there was plenty of blood in that. The patient also had episodes of retching and mild abdominal distension.
The most surprising thing was that the mother suffered abdominal pain and had history of diarrhea. It means the family history has also an impact in this case.
It can be confused with normal diarrhea and ascariasis.
The other informations of study:
The urine analysis and culture found to be normal and negative. Furthermore by direct examination of fresh fecal samples shown the presence of E. histolytica cysts and trophozoites with red blood cells as well as increased leukocytes.
