Answer #1

a) Non-adherence can be divided into four categories:

Primary non-adherence is when a patient does not fill an initial prescription.

Secondary non-adherence is when a patient does not refill a prescription on time.

Unintentional non-adherence occurs when a patient simply forgets to take medication or is careless in some way as to miss a scheduled dose.

Intentional non-adherence is a decision to not take the medication.

b) Non-adherence to medications is a universal issue that has garnered significant attention in recent years. It has been linked to poor health outcomes, increased hospitalizations, and even death, all of which cost the healthcare system billions of dollars.

c) Poor knowledge of the illness and medication, Administering and dosage of the medication.

Independent pausing, stopping or controlling of the medication.

Lack of competence in self-management.

Hiding the drug information (example: drugs prescribed by private doctors).

Fear towards drugs..

Diseases where poor control does not yet present symptoms.

Challenges with lifestyle changes.

Replacing prescription drugs with self-administered drugs.

Problems due to medication cost.

d) Medication non-adherence is a serious global health issue. Pharmaceutical companies could have lost billions in global revenues due to patient non-adherence to medications for illnesses. Therefore, Improving adherence could be a more attractive channel for CVS to grow revenue than relying on steady price increases. Increased adherence improves the overall demand for the products.

c) Stakeholders should invest on piloting and deploying various tech-based adherence tools which will boost the medical adherence in patients. Finding tool based adherence solutions which is not too expensive and patient engaging is the key. The solutions should be logistically simple, capital intensive, cheap and scalable across boarders. Therefore channeling investments for patient activation and adherence lift could positively impact the profits in long term.
