A mixture contains acetone, methanol, 1-propanol, and water. The boiling points of the components are as follows:

  • acetone (CH3COCH3), 50.5∘C
  • methanol (CH3OH), 66∘C
  • 1-propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH), 97∘C
  • water H2O, 100∘C
Which pair of the components would you expect to be the hardest to separate by distillation? Select the correct answer below:

a. acetone and methanol

b. acetone and 1-propanol

c. acetone and water

d. methanol and 1-propanol

e. methanol and water

f. 1-propanol and water

Answer #1

The correct option is (f) 1-propanol and water.

EXPLANATION: Seperation of liquid mixtures by distillation is based on the difference between the boiling points of the individual liquids. Liquid mixtures which have high difgerence in their individual boiling points are easy to seperate by distillation. The mixture in which the liquids have the least difference in their boiling points are hardest to seperate by distillation.

As 1-propanol and water has the least boiling point difference of only 3 °C, 1-propanol and water mixture will be hardest to seperate by distillation.

how to do this problem An Extraction-Distillation Process A mixture containing 50,0 wt% acetone (A) and 50.0 wt% water (W) is to be separated into two streams-one rich in acetone and the other in water. The separation process consists of extraction of the acetone from the water into methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK or M), which has a much higher affinity for acetone than it does for water. How would you use separation techniques to recover acetone, 4-carboxyazobenzene, 1-propanol, and cumene in a laboratory experiment. Techniques learned are: Solvent recrystallization, thin layer chromatography, column chromatography, liquid-liquid extraction, distillation. (Would prefer not to do a distillation as this times a long time). Your company has designed a new process to dye rubbers. The process uses cumene to swell the material allowing the organic dye 4-carboxyazobenzene to penetrate more easily. The resulting rubber is able to retain its color, and...
