Answer #1

15. A

16. C

15 and 16.

The process of conversion of atmospheric molecule of Nitrogen into usable form of Nitrogen is referred to as nitrogen fixation. The incorporation of this usable form of Nitrogen into plants is referred to as nitrogen assimilation.

The first step in nitrogen fixation is ammonification. It occurs with the help of ammonifying bacteria which converts molecule of diNitrogen into ammonium ion.

The second step is the Ammonia into nitrite by nitrite reductase enzyme.

The third step is the conversion of nitrite into nitrates by nitrate reductase enzyme.

All these three steps are performed by different groups of bacteria. This bacteria are collectively called as nitrogen fixers.

The final step in nitrogen cycle is the incorporation of nitrate in to plants which is referred to as nitrogen assimilation. Nitrate inside plants is used to form nitrogen containing compounds like amino acids and proteins.

17. D

Phosphate is used to prepare adenosine triphosphate because it contains a phosphate group. Phospholipid are also made up of hydrophilic phosphate group and hydrophobic fatty acid tails. Nucleotides contain phosphate group and sugar molecule along with the nitrogen bases. All these molecules contain phosphate and therefore phosphate is used to prepare all these.

    3. Nitrogen Fixation is a process by which some bacteria can convert N2 into ammonia. This process is very important in making the element nitrogen, a component of amino acids and nucleotides, available to ecosystems. Even though N2 makes up 80% of the atmosphere, nitrogen is the limiting nutrient in many ecosystems. Because nitrogen fixation is so energetically expensive, bacteria will only synthesize the proteins needed for this process if there is no available source of already fixed nitrogen, such...

The statement above is false - NH_4^+ is not toxic but is instead an important source of nitrogen. NH_4^+ reacts with NADPH (and NADH) to reduce the reducing power in a cell. At pH 7...
