The Finches with larger beaks happened to be the once favoured by the particular set of conditions during a severe drought in 1977.

Explanation:

Finches with large sized beaks can eat hard seeds and thus able to survive amidst severe drought conditions. They were more fit than small beaked finches.

As per the Darwin's theory - survival of the fittest. Large beaked finches survived.

Evolution of Darwin's finches brought inheritable changes in their beak size and form, that's why they were able to use different food resources during drought .
