Answer #1

The algae are eukaryotic and photosynthetic organisms ranging from unicellular to multicellular forms. The algae undergo both the asexual and sexual reproductions. The sexual reproduction in algae is accomplished by meiosis. During meiosis the progeny or offspring receive half of the genrtic material from each parent cell. The sexual reproduction is induced by adverse environmental conditions like limiting of nutrients or sunlight etc. The sexual reproduction occurs in two stages. During first stage the cells contain single set of chromosomes and are called haploid. During second stage, the cells contain two sets of chromsomes and are called diploid. During fertilization, two haploid cells or gametes fuse and form a diploid zygote. The diploid zygote develops into the sporophyte. The diploid cell later undergoes meiosis and produces haploid gametes and this state is called gametophyte state. The gametes are haploid and contain half the chromosomes to that of parent cells. Therefore, the option b is correct.
