Answer #1

23.Answer- The macromolecule responsible for the genetic transmission could not be identified by this experiment.

The DNA and protein both contain the carbon, nitrogen and oxygen molecules in their structure. Thus, the radioactive carbon or nitrogen or oxygen are not specific for DNA and protein ,can't be used for differentiating DNA and protein. If radioactive carbon is used in Hershey and chase experiment, the both pellet and supernatant will have radioactive carbon and the macromolecule responsible for the genetic transmission can't be identified. The DNA specifically contain the phosphorus but protein don't contain phosphorus. The protein specifically contain sulfur but DNA don't contain sulfer. Thus, the radioactive phosphorus and sulfur is used to differentiate between DNA and protein in Hershey and chase experiement. As a result, the radioactive phosphorus was found in the pellet (within the bacteria) and radioactive sulfur was found in supernatant( outside the bacteria).
