We need the assistance of enzymes such as choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) to make acetylcholine because there _____ a gene for acetylcholine. Neurons typically communicate with each other via _______ signals in the form of neurotransmitters like acetylcholine. We also need other enzymes to break down excess neurotransmitter. If we are exposed to acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, then we would expect to see a(n) _________ in the amount of acetylcholine available in the synaptic cleft.

A)Is not; electrical; decrease

B) Is; electrical; increase

C) Is not; chemical; increase

Answer #1

The correct option is C) Is not; chemical; increase

Acetylcholine is synthesized by the enzyme choline acetyltransferase from choline and acetyl-CoA. Neurons communicate via both electrical signals and chemical signals. The electrical signals are action potentials and are used to propagate a signal within a neuron. Chemical signals are neurotransmitters which are used in interaction between neurons. Acetylcholinesterase is the enzyme used to break down acetylcholine into choline and acetate. An acetylcholinesterase inhibitor inhibits this enzyme and thereby increase both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft.

The Brain on Mind Altering Drugs Psychoactive drugs alter brain function by acting at synapses in the brain, where they may mimic, enhance, or block the effects of natural signaling molecules (neurotransmitters). The neurotransmitter dopamine plays a particularly important role in creating the dependency aspect of both drug and behavioral addictions. Natural behaviors which enhance survival and/or reproduction, such as eating or engaging in sex, result in a surge of dopamine. Normally, this response helps individuals learn to repeat beneficial...
