QUESTION 13-

ANSWER- all of the above may affect metabolic rate.

EXPLANATION -

Metabolic rate -

  • definition - minimum amount of energy required by the body to maintain life at complete physical and mental rest in the post - absorptive state.

Factors that affect metabolic rate -

  • Age - infants and growing children have higher metabolic rate. Metabolic rate decrease with age.
  • Gender - men have higher metabolic rate than female.
  • Lean muscle mass - metabolic rate increases with increase in lean muscle mass.
  • Harmones- thyroid harmone increase metabolic rate.
  • Starvation/Fasting - metabolic rate decrease during starvation. So diet also have affect on metabolic rate.
  • Physical Activity - metabolic rate increases with regular physical exercise.
  • Environment- metabolic rate is higher in cold climate compare to warm conditions.
  • Fever - metabolic rate increases with fever.
  • Disease - metabolic rate in infection, leukemia, cardiac failure, hypertension increases.
  • Pregnant women have more metabolic rate.
  • A taller thin person have more metabolic rate than a shorter fatter person.

So all the above given factors affect metabolic rate.
