Humans are social animals. We live in society with certain rules, regulations. From old times, people are categorised in different groups as they were likely to fit.Social Stratification is the grouping of people in different categories based on social and economic factors which includes wealth, income, gender, caste, class, etc.
There are some characteristics of class system of stratification. In class people are divided into group on the basis of wealth and respect.Second individuals get more privileges and freedom in class stratification.Class stratification divided society in groups.Class is an open system that's why their is large room for entering and existing. It is changeable.
In caste system of stratification people are divided into different units of group on the basis of their occupation. Some characteristics of caste system of stratification are- Caste system is rigid in nature.Individual cannot go beyond its caste.Their is no room to change caste even if class of an individual changes.Caste system is fixed and unchangeable.Society moved in cyclical direction and each caste is depend upon other for work.
Their is a difference between class and caste system of Stratification. In caste system people are categorise on the basis of occupation while in class stratification people are categorise on the bais of wealth and income. In caste system people cannot change their caste, it is permanent from birth to death while in class system people can change their class if their wealth and income increases or decrease,it is temporary in nature.
For example - In Indian society, their exist caste and class system of stratification both.Suppose Ram is a barber by caste and businessmen by occupation. He sells watches in wholesale market. After some time his business regularly earning large profit, So here Class of Ram change from middle class to high class but his caste of barber fix with him till death.
There are two type of stratification one is Open and Second is Close. In open stratification their is a chance of mobility but in close stratification there is no space for mobility.Caste system is close stratification and class system is open stratification. Most of the societies follows Open stratification system.Class system is prevelant in society. This is because we have now develop our living and earning system more flexible and easy. This create more changes of changing stratification of class rapidly in comparison to old times where monarchy was present.
