The compressive force developed on the smooth bolt shank A at the jaws is 20 lbs. Determine the force P applied to the handles of the vise grip.

The total moment of force is conserved in all types of lever(class I, class 2, and class 3).

The diagram shown in the question is a type I lever with fulcrum in between the load and the effort.

M=0 ------(1)

The distance between fulcrum and load AE=2 in

Angle of the load made with the vertical =25o

Distance between fulcrum and effort EP=0.75+2.75=3.50 in

Force at the jaws FA=20lbs

Substituting these in equation 1,

20*2*sin 25= FE *3.50

Thus,

FE =4.83 lbs

This is the force applied at the handles of the vise grip.
