What is I/O psychology?

The field of Industrial and Organizational psychology applies the principles of psychology (such as personality and predicting behavior and performance) to work settings. Industrial psychologists often design tests or procedures to help select people for jobs and then use various statistics to ensure those tests are actually selecting the best candidates for those jobs without bias against protected groups such as women or minorities.

In simple terms, Academically,it involves the study of workplace performance using research methods and psychometrics in lab and real-world settings.

Benefits of industrial organizational psychology:

  • It brings improvement to an organization, such as competent personal who takes care of the company's well function, therefore, the organizational climate, which is an important support to create a better place to work and consequently, get better results at work and success levels..
  • The plus is in the psychologycal eye that other profesionals don't have in order to make and take better decisions when it comes to select the best person to fit in the vacancy, or to give employees training to improve the performance and sometimes, give and or maintain the motivation in them.
  • IO psychologists are the messiahs in the age of People Analytics - the use of analytics to predict the behavior of employees in an organization.
  • It helps in improving organizational effectiveness, team building, compensation, organizational change and much more.
  • Organizational or industrial psychology is way too important if you want your organization to be the best.

Examples:

1).Joes manager of a big team of an international bank. They handle finance requests from entrepreneurs all over the world. Joe wants to work more efficiently within his time of 30 and wants to know how to do this. He calls his friend James, an organizational psychologist specialised in banking. James talks to Joe and then makes a psych strategy to create more efficiency within the team. This plan is implemented and measured after performing it. Joe thanks James and the bank pays him for the work.

The main theme is optimal work performance.

2).Let's assume X is an I/O psychologist working for a company Y, He notices the company productivity to be decreasing .So,he collects the data regarding motivation, rewards, and general employee sentiments about job enjoyment and evaluate data given by employees. It’s up to the I/O psych to figure out solutions and changes (with the help of other company professionals) that might benefit the workplace and employees based on satisfaction temperature checks.
