You conduct a cross between a true-breeding line of white fish and a true-breeding line of red fish. The F1 fish are all white. When the F1 fish are crossed to produce the F2 generation, the following data is obtained: White: 128 Red: 53 Pink: 42 Hypothesize a mode of inheritance for color in these fish.

Answer #1

In the F1 generation all fish are white colored. Which means the white is the dominant color and the red is the recessive color.

When two such F1 offspring are crossed, the F2 offspring are in the numbers---128 white, 53 red and 42 pink.

The total offspring are 223. The ration in a dihybrid cross has to be 9:3:3:1 under normal dominant and recessive inheritance. But we are getting the ratio as 9: 3: 4. ( 9 white, 3 pink, 4 red)

This is showing an epistatic inheritance. It is recessive epistasis. A recessive allele at epistatic  locus masks the inheritance of the gene at another locus. The gene for the white will express only when the epistatic locus has a dominant allele either homodominant (AA) or hetero dominant (Aa). If both are recessive, then the dominant trait can't be expressed, a recessive trait is expressed. In the absence fo the dominant allele at the epistatic locus, recessive allele is expressing which is red. Rest of the offspring are pink colored.

It is recessive epistatic inheritance.

    9) A flower breeder notices that a cross between true-breeding red roses and true-breeding white roses makes all red-flowering F1 offspring. Interbreeding these F1 offspring, she gets 100 red-flowering roses, 40 pink-flowering roses, and 44 white-flowering roses in the F2 generation. What are the genotypes of the parents, F1 offspring, and F2 offspring? What is the probable mode of inheritance? Check your answer with the appropriate statistical test.

In snapdragons, when true-breeding red flowers are crossed with true-breeding white flowers, all the offspring exhibit pink flowers. When true-breeding tall snapdragons are crossed with dwarf snapdragons, all the offspring are tall. A researcher decided to perform a dihybrid cross with the above characters and obtained all pink, tall snapdragons (F1). It was then decided to perform across with members of the F1 generation. What are the expected phenotypic ration for the F2 generation? (PLEASE INCLUDE LEGENDS, PUNNET SQUARES and...

    2) Two true-breeding varieties of cucumbers (long and miniature) have been obtained.  Long cucumbers are on average 12 inches upon reaching maturity, whereas short ones are about 2 inches long. Performing a cross between these varieties, you find that the F1 cucumbers are all around 7 inches.  What single-locus mode of inheritance would lead to this outcome? In the F2 generation, you obtain cucumbers in five discrete size categories: 2, 4.5, 7, 9.5, and 12 inches.  Is this what you would have expected...

You perform a trihybrid cross: You cross true-breeding purple-flowered, round, yellow peas (PPRRYY) with true-breeding white-flowered, wrinkled, green peas (pprryy). You then cross the resulting F1 offspring together to generate an F2 generation. What is the probability of an F2 plant having white flowers and producing round, yellow peas?

Jersey pigs are usually red but sandy pigs are also possible. Two different varieties of true-breeding sandy pigs were crossed. The F1 were all red. An F1 X F1 cross was made and resulted in the following F2 pigs: 17 red pigs, 13 sandy pigs and 2 white pigs. What is the genotype of the two varieties of true-breeding sandy pigs? Explain this pattern of inheritance. (Diagram the cross giving geneotypes)
