What are the characteristics of life? Give an example of a living organism and explain why it is considered alive?
There are many characteristics of life or living organisms. There also some defining characteristics that are only applicable for living organisms.
Those are growth in numberor reproduction, growth by mass, breathing, respiration, excretion, metabolism, self-consciousness etc.
Let's consider an elephant. First of all the elephant grows in size and changes its number by normal reproduction and also produces fertile offspring. It performs breathing by spontaneous intake and output of gases.Elephant utilizes the oxygen to oxidize nutrients for energy. The body mechanism of elephant absorbs selective nutrients and performs metabolic process then excretes waste products. If you will throw stones towards an elephant then it will react negatively and offering a bunch of banana will make him glad. So,they are self-conscious .Hence they can be regarded as alive .

1. Amoeba exhibit the characteristics of living things, that is, movement, irritability, nutrition, metabolism, growth, and reproduction. How many of these characteristics have you been able to observe? 2. Have you seen any evidence that the amoeba responds to a stimulus? 3. Is paramecium bilaterally symmetrical? Explain. 4. Why do you suppose paramecium has contractile vacuoles? 5. Did the cilia of paramecium beat in unison? Does this explain how the organism can move so uniformly through a fluid?
