The four phases involved in the conversion of freshly cut corn crop to corn silage are:

  • Aerobic phase - The freshly cut corn are packed and sealed well to eliminate oxygen. In this phase, the aerobic bacteria use up the corn sugar and release heat as per the equation Sugar+Oxygen \rightarrow Carbon\ dioxide+Water+Heat . This phase lasts for approximately 1 day.
  • Lag phase - The corn cells break down with help of plant enzymes and are used as food by bacteria. The plant proteins are also broken down and become more soluble.
  • Fermentation phase - Lactic acid bacteria grows and multiplies since pH has declined now. Lactic acid and Acetic acid are formed further increasing the acidity of the silage.
  • Stable phase - Fermentation has stopped and a final low pH of approximately 3.8 - 4.0 is reached. The bacteria have stopped growing now and a steady state is reached. The silage is preserved.
