Most of us sell our labor for wages, which provides us with an income to support our spending, saving, and investing. One way to maximize the value of your labor is to improve your ability to sell yourself to employers. Education is one way to positively influence the value of your labor; networking -- building social capital -- is another.

1) Think about your job search or career development quest. Who are the individuals or groups that you can think of that might be able to help you?

2) How would you go about growing your network to include these people?

Answer #1

(1): The individuals that can help me in my quest for career development or job search will include my alumni members, my seniors from my college, and my friends and associates. These individuals have been associated with me and are aware of my skills and capabilities, and my strengths and weaknesses. In terms of groups my alumni group and my professional groups will help me here. The members of my alumni group are well connected through my alma maters alumni website. Most of the alumni members are well placed in their career and a few are even successful entrepreneurs. They can help me in mu quest for job search and career development. In fact new job postings are regularly updated and provided in my alumni group. I am also a part of certain professional groups in LinkedIn and I can use my contacts in this network as well to accelerate my career prospects.

(2): To grow my network the most important thing that I will have to focus is on stay active and participate fruitfully in these groups. This will make my presence noticeable in these groups. I will also attend networking events such as alumni meet; meetings of professionals in conferences etc. Once a new contact is established I will make sure to keep in touch. As I am doing a business major I can joint management groups in LinkedIn and become active on some key groups. All relationships have to be symbiotic in nature and by contributing to the groups in my capacity as a business major I will be able to showcase my skills. I can, for instance, write on current economic topics of relevance, analyze the topic and then evaluate the implications. All these will help me to grow my network systematically.
