The process involves many chemical steps and 3 metabolic pathway glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. The first of these is called Glycolysis, In this pathway one 6 - carbon glucose molecule is converted to 3 - carbon molecule of Pyruvate. in the early steps of this metabolic pathway two molecules of ATP must be supplied for energy later on , however a total of 4 ATP molecules is produced, for a net gain of 2 ATP per glucose. The other important product of this pathway is NADH + H+ and 2 molecules of this product are produced from each glucose metabolized in the pathway.

The second metabolic pathway is citric acid cycle or krebs cycle. Before entering in this pathway, the pyruvate formed from glycolysis undergoes a change. It loses a carbon molecule as CO2 and the remaining two carbons combine with coenzyme A to form acetylcoenzyme A. Now the carbon atom enters the kreb cycle for metabolism. The first compound formed is a 6-carbon molecule called citrate. Then the number of other intermediate forms and eventually a 4 - carbon molecule results. The two carbon that entered the cycle now exists as Oxaloacetate. After 2 turn of krebs cycle (for 2 pyruvate molecule) a total of six molecules of carbon dioxide will have formed from the carbon in glucose. importantly in these reaction a total of 6 NAD and 4 FADH2 was produced. in addition 2 ATP molecules were generated
