Sol: electron donating group activates the benzene ring to undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution. On the other hand electron withdrawing groups deactivate the ring as they withdraw electron density from the ring, make the ring less reactive for electrophilic attack.

Ring activation order for electrophilic aromatic substitution is:

-NH2 > -OH > - OCH3 > -NHCOCH3 > -CH3 > -H > -Cl > - NO2
