HEAVYLOAD INC has 3 resources (Resource A, Resource B and Resource C) in its production process. The production process involves 3 products (Product A, Product B and Product C) being processed through these 3 resources. Currently, there is demand for 700 units of Product A, 1,200 units of Product B and 200 units of Product C per hour. The following bullets provide information about each resource:

At Resource A, the processing time for Product A is 14.112 seconds and for Product C is 50.4 seconds. Resource A does not process Product B. 4 workers currently work at Resource A but this resource only comprises 70% of their total work time for the company.

At Resource B, the processing time for Product B is 10.368 seconds and for Product C is 77.184 seconds. Resource B does not process Product A. 4 workers currently work at Resource A but this resource only comprises 80% of their total work time for the company.

At Resource C, the processing time for Product A is 17.28 seconds and for Product B is 10.368 seconds. Resource C does not process Product C. 4 workers currently work at Resource A but this resource only comprises 80% of their total work time for the company.

Assuming that demand for each of the 3 products (Product A, Product B and Product C) changes to 100 units per hour, answer the following questions:

a)What is the demand rate for Resource A, Resource B and Resource C in flow units per hour?

b)Find the capacity for Resource A, Resource B and Resource C in minutes per hour

c)Find the maximum hourly flow rate of Product A, Product B and Product C

d)Find the actual hourly flow rate of Product A, Product B and Product C

Answer #1
Product A Product B Product C
Resource A Processing time 14.112 sec - 50.4 sec 4 workers with 70% of total work time
Resource B processing time - 10.368sec 77.184sec 4 workers with 80% of total work time
Resource C processing time 17.28sec 10.368sec - 4 workers with 80% of total work time
Current demand per hour 700 units 1200 units 200 units
Assuming demand changes per hour 100 units 100 units 100 units
Processing time by Resource A for current demand in sec 9878.4 - 10080
(14.112* 700 units, 50.4 * 200 units)
Processing time by Resource B for current demand in sec - 12441.6 15436.8
(10.368* 1200 units, 77.184* 200 units)
Processing time by Resource C for current demand in sec 12096 12441.6 -
( 17.28* 700 units, 10.368* 1200 units)
1 hour = 3600 sec
demand rate for Resource A per hour 2.744 - 2.8
(9878.4/3600,10080/3600)
demand rate for Resource B per hour - 3.456 4.288
demand rate for Resource C per hour 3.36 3.456 -
Resource A in minutes per hour for 100 units 23.52 0 84
(14.112*100units/60sec for 1 min)
capacity of Resource A is 70% 16.464 0 58.8
Resource B in minutes per hour for 100 units 0 17.28 128.64
(10.368*100 units/60sec for 1 min)
capacity of Resource A is 80% 0 13.824 102.912
Resource C in minutes per hour for 100 units 28.8 17.28 0
(17.28*100 units/60sec for 1 min)
capacity of Resource A is 80% 23.04 13.824 0
