What is the difference between product quality control and process control?

Introduction of Quality control

Quality control is process or system of defining and maintaining set of standards for product or service by testing product or analysing services to ensure that product or service meets quality requirements. Main aim of quality control is to ensure business is achieving growth within quality standards. If it fails to maintain standards, business has been adversely affected with loss of customers.

Importance of effective QC program in organization

In business operation, it is less possibility to have zero defect with 100% perfection. Enterprise must decide and quantify set of quality standards in production that must be met. It is defined that at what extent variations are acceptable with how much limits. For example there will always be some variation or constraints in production of materials in terms of raw materials used, production method applied, queuing, and reliability and scalability of the finished product or output.

Quality control involves setting up standards about how much variation in process or in production are acceptable. It is to ensure that a product is manufactured, or a service is provided, to meet expected specifications which ensure customer needs are met. In enterprise like the percentage of units that fail or has defect must be defined to ensure quality of product. There should be quality control plan to improve production or service providing process. QC is ongoing process for remedial efforts to satisfy quality requirement of organization with less recurrences of defects in product or loopholes in services. QC ensures that defective units must be repaired or rejected based on set standard until the customer is satisfied

Product quality control / quality control - more product oriented defect identification in product and controlling product quality.

Product Quality Control ensures set of activities for ensuring and maintaining quality in products and identifying defects in actual products produced. It is more focus on identifying and correcting defects in finished output product. Product quality control is more reactive process as it detects and corrects defects in manufactured product. There are set of standards which are established based on customer requirements and product requirement needed to be fulfilled and it is usually the responsibility of quality control team team that tests the product for defects and take corrective actions if products fail to meet requirement of customer or specific standards.

Example of product quality control : Six sigma quality control in manufacturing industry , Software Testing , user acceptance testing (UAT) in IT/software industry- more focus on finished product qualities or qualities should be maintained during manufacturing or developing phases.

Process control / Quality Assurance – more process oriented /Ensures defect prevention

Process control ensures quality in set of activities / processes by which products are manufactured or developed. It has aim of prevention defects by managing and controlling process responsible for operation in making product. It is considered as proactive quality process as it emphasises on preventing defect before accrued. Firm can design and establish standard quality management system and the assessment of process as per requirement of production quality and demand. Periodic audits can be performed to ensure performance of process in operation in organization.

For any businesses this continuous improvement process use of statistical process control (SPC) ensures monitoring current processes and plotting charts with variation in lower and upper controllable limits. Datasets are collected to analyse performance of process , process excellence and out of control limits when it is found that process is exceeding predetermined limits of performance.

For Example : Process verification in call centre service centre to ensure call quality and customer satisfaction. Stastical process control and verification can be used to identify improvement area in process of lifecycle of service providing.
