Several research evidence suggests that the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) was decreased by some antioxidant vitamins like α-tocopherol (vitamin E), β-carotene, folate, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), selenium, ubiquinone (coenzyme Q10) and bioflavonoids.

Reason:

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the primary lipoprotein found in atherosclerotic plaque. Atherosclerosis is a type of coronary heart disease and the oxidation of LDL is a prime factor for the development of atherosclerosis In this the LDL oxidation is a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis. . LDL oxidation occurs by excessive production of free radicals. 1–3 Excess free radicals in plasma and the arterial intima increase LDL oxidation.1 Oxidized LDL is cytotoxic and is taken up by arterial macrophages, which is a primary factor in plaque formation and progression. Antioxidants can reduce the rate of LDL oxidation by increasing the release of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule that can increase the production cyclic GMP (cGMP),. cGMP can step-up the release of various neurotransmitters that helps in relaxation and vasodilation of smooth muscle.
