How do you calculate the net charge of a molecule? For example what would the net charge of this molecule in the stomach at a ph of 1.8 be? The answer is +1 but why? I understand that the asp molecule is negatively charged so why is the answer +1?

I am referencing to
Lys his arg being positively charged
Asp and gluare negatively charges and
Cys and tyr neutral

Answer #1

Asp is the symbol for Aspartic acid.

Its structure is as shown.

The ionisation of -COOH group gives carboxylate ion and amino group is protonated to form ammonium ion.

NH3

Total net charge is -1. Hence, it is a negatively charged amino acid.

When pH is raised to 1.8, the carboxylate ions are protonated. This is because, pH 1.8 corresponds to highly acidic medium.

но он NH3

The net charge is +1.
