Scenario 1: Lines 1 and 2 produce different products, which are individually packaged in process G.

Line 1: A-B-C capacity= 10 units per hour, because the bottleneck is process B whose capacity is 10 units per hour

Line 2: D-E-F capacity= 8 units per hour, because the bottleneck is process E whose capacity is 8 units per hour

Therefore we can say that total of 10+8= 18 units are arriving at G, but the G’s capacity is only 15 units so the system capacity is 15 units per hour

a.     System capacity is 15 units.

b.     Is process G a bottleneck: Yes, because G is reducing the final capacity of the system

Scenario 2: Lines 1 and 2 produce two components for the same product, which are assembled (one part from line 1 and one part from line 2) in process G. no more than 8 units can be assembled because line 2 cannot produce more than 8 units, therefore the system bottleneck is process E with capacity of 8 units per hour

c.     System capacity is 8 units.

d.    Is process G a bottleneck: No, because the bottleneck is process E

  

True: A bottleneck process on an assembly line typically has the smallest capacity of any process on the line. Because in an assembly line every process has to provide the parts with equal importance and the lowest capacity process will directly influence the production quantity as we can see in Scenario 2.
