Question
I took 100 microliters of bacteria culture and placed them in a tube, after that I took 450 microliters of sodium azide and place it in the same tube, I also took 450 microliters of methylene blue and placed that in the tube as well. What is the dilution factor of bacteria, in percentage?

Answer #1

Dilution is the one in which a unit volume of liquid of your interest is mixed with appropriate volume of a solvent to achieve the desired concentration. To calculate dilution factor (DF) we simply use the formula:

DF = Final volume/Aliquot volume

Here, aliquot volume is 100µl and final volume will be (100+450+450)= 1000µl so

                                          DF = 1000/100 =10

A dilution factor of 10 means 1:10 dilution and to express it in percentage we will multiply it by 100 .

1/10=0.1 and multiplying it by 100 gives 10%

So, bacterial culture was diluted by a factor of 10 (10%).

    Can someone please help me with this question? I tried doing it and I got 2.4x10^8, but I am not sure if that is right. Thanks in advanced. A 1/10 serial dilution of a bacterial culture was performed in tubes "A" through "E" (dilutions were made in that order beginning with tube "A" like in the handout slide titled "Spread Plating"). 100 microliters of the diluted culture from the final tube "E" was spread onto a plate. Following incubation of...

    please help with whatever possible. thank you so much in advance. Name One use of serial dilutions is to calculate the concentration of microorganisms. Since it would usually be challenging or even impossible to actually count the number of microorganisms in a sample, the sample is diluted and plated to get a reasonable number of colonies to count (usually between 25 to 250 colonies is the goal). Since each colony on an agar plate theoretically grew from a single microorganism,...

Explain the chemical properties of the stain and bacteria surface. 3-Preparation of Bacterial Smears and Simple Stains Introduction Microbial cultures are handled using aseptic technique. Aseptie technique is a set of procedures used to minimize contamination of materials by microorganisms from the environment, and to minimize the spread of cultures around the laboratory. In this experiment, you will be using an inoculating loop to transfer bacteria from a culture tube...
