1. Cytoplasm :-
• Glycolysis.
• Initial splitting of glucose.

• Glycolysis is the process for initial splitting of glucose. In this process glucose break down into two molecules of pyruvate.
• After this step, pyruvate enters into mitochondria and further steps of respiration occur there.

2. Mitochondrial matrix :-
• Pyruvate is oxidized to acetyl CoA.
• Krebs cycle.

• Pyruvate oxidation occrs in mitochondrial matrix and by this process pyruvate converted into acetyl Coenzyme A.
• This acetyl CoA enters in krebs cycle and produce large amount of NADH and FADH2.

3. Mitochondrial inner membrane :-
• Electron transport chain.
• Production of most ATP occurs here.

• NADH and FADH2 produced in prior steps of respiration go through oxidative phosphorylation in electron transport chain (ETS) and converted into ATPs.
• Complexes of ETS are situated at inner mitochondrial membrane.
