Answer #1

You added 3.0 mL of 0.15 M sodium persulphate (Na2S2O8) to each of the test tubes. The total volume of the solution in each test tube is 12.0 mL. Note that you added 3.0 mL persulphate to each of test tubes 1-5.

Therefore,

moles S2O82- added = (3.0 mL)*(1 L/1000 mL)*(0.15 mol/L ) = 4.5*10-4 mol.

[S2O82-]initial = 0.0375 M

Write down the two equations:

S2O82- + 2 I- ------> 2 SO42- + I2

2 S2O32- + I2 ------> S4O62- + 2 I-

Moles S2O32- = ½*(moles I2 consumed) = ½*(moles I2 liberated) [ I2 is generated instantly by the action of persulphate on KI].

Again moles I2 liberated = moles S2O82- consumed.

Therefore, moles S2O82- consumed = 1/2*(moles S2O32- consumed).

Now, we shall compute moles S2O32- consumed and hence moles S2O82- consumed.

Determination

Moles S2O32- consumed = (volume of S2O32- in L)*(concentration of S2O32- in mol/L)

Moles S2O82- consumed = 2*moles S2O32-

Moles S2O82- remaining = (moles S2O82-)initial – (moles S2O82-)consumed
