What are the environmental factors that will encourage metacognition regulation and the use of metacognition strategies to improve learning? Explain. Under what circumstances might metacognitive strategies be less effective? Why?
Metacognitive strategies refers to methods used to help students understand the way they learn; in other words, it means processes designed for students to 'think' about their 'thinking. It is an increasingly useful mechanism to enhance student learning, both for immediate outcomes and for helping students to understand their own learning processes. Metacognition is a teachable skill that is central to other skills sets such as problem solving, decision-making, and critical thinking. Reflective thinking, as a component of metacognition, is the ability to reflect critically on learning experiences and processes in order to inform future progress.
Smart Learning Environment with well equipped modern digital technologies help to enhance the metacognition. It is important for students to understand that the ability to learn is not a fixed quantity, but a skill that continues to develop over time. Modelling is a critical instructional strategy that promotes a better understanding of previous concepts and learning new information. Creating a connection between new information and previously learned material in a meaningful and relevant manner. An environment that encourages thinking awareness. Providing an environment where students feel comfortable attempting new feats and utilizing innovative strategies is imperative. With this, the Metacognitive learning environment should encompass constant and deliberate communication, collaboration and feedback. Using a Problem Based Learning model enables students to utilize these Metacognitive strategies to effectively solve problems.
Environmental conditions that does not support smart learning, modern technology, awareness, innovative strategies will be less effective in Metacognitive learning.
