There are 6 steps in the simple linear marketing research process. These are as follows :
Problem Definition
Understanding and defining the problem is key to the research process. If it is not done well it can drift the research outcome. This is the most important part of the process.
Research Approach Developed
What methods will be used in the study
Research Design Developed
This includes the blueprint or roadmap of the research. How to collect data , where to collect the data.  
Fieldwork or data collection
Whether qualitative or quantitative data to be collected , or it can be interview or focused group study
Data Preparation and Analysis
Data collected will be in war form. SO data preparation is very challenging and important to arrive at right conclusions. If it is not done well there can be mistakes in outcome
Report preparation and presentation
This is the last step based on the data analysed.

Please specifically for market research the process the research could be problem identification research or problem solving research.
Problem identification research involves like market potential research , sales analysis research, business trends research etc.,
Whereas probem solving research includes cases like product research, segmentation research, promotion research, distribution research etc.,
