1. A five-carbon ribose sugar, a nitrogenous base adenine and three phospahte groups make up the structure of ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate). Phosphoric acid anhydride bond ( phosphoanhydride bond) in ATP is considered a high energy bond because the free energy of products produced after breaking of this bond is lower than the reactants (ATP and H2O). The products produced by breaking of phosphoanhydride bond in ATP are Adenosine diphospahte (ADP) and inorganic phosphate(Pi). When phosphoanhydride bond is broken, ATP produces energy that is sufficient for powering various reactions taking place in a cell.

3. ATP is highly unstable. ATP hydrolysis releases energy. ATP hydrolysis is a spontaneous reaction because free energy change for hydrolysis of ATP is negative. Free energy change for hydrolysis of ATP in a cell is - 14 kcal/mol.

Negative value of free energy change for a reaction means that the reaction is energetically favourable and can occur spontaneously without energy input. Such reaction is known as spontaneous reaction. Hydrolysis of ATP does not require energy input.

Positive value of free energy change for a reaction means the reaction is energetically unfavourable and it requires energy input. Such reaction is called nonspontaneous reaction. ATP synthesis is a nonspontaneous reaction.
