Answer #1

What is the flame test?
The flame test is used to visually determine the identity of an unknown metal of an ionic salt based on the characteristic colour the salt turns the flame of a bunsen burner. The substances in the competition are Sodium acetate, sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium carbonate, lithium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium nitrate, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, boric acid, and ammonium chloride.

Cornstarch, glucose, sucrose, magnesium sulfate will give a negative flame test.

Flame test for KCl = Purple flame

Flame test for sucrose = Negative flame test

Flame test for KNO3 = Violet flame

Flame test for Ascorbic acid = Negative flame test

Flame test for cornstarch = Negative flame test

Flame test for CaCO3 = Red-orange flame

Q 1 & 2 1. Sodium ion (Na) and calcium ion (Ca2) produce nearly the same color in a flame test (yellow and yellow-orange, respectively). Describe a way to differentiate between the two using a solution of Na,CO and write the correct balanced equation(s). (Hint: recall the solubility rules for Na ion.) A saturated solution of an unknown solid reacted with AgNO, to give a pale yellow precipitate, and also reacted with Pb(NO), to give a white precipitate. Based on...
