This question may be completed independently or as a group discussion. As part of a forensic analysis, you have been asked to determine an individual’s ancestry using skeletal indicators. The metric measurements you collect indicate the individual is of European ancestry, but you see several nonmetric traits in the cranium that are typically found in individuals of Asian ancestry. Why might the two methods disagree? Be sure to consider the differences between metric and nonmetric traits as well as other factors that might contribute to individual skeletal variation.

Answer:

  • As a part of forensic analysis, Skeletal indicators provides information about the indiviual's ancestry or identification methods.
  • It includes analysis of biological profile thorough statistical and morphometric methods, biochemical methods and comparative radiography.
  • Anthropologists are able to find out the  ancestry through skeleton by analysizing the morphology, or shape, of the skull and its cavity and shape of face.
  • In the European ancestry, Anthropologists observed straight facial profiles and narrower faces with narrow, high nasal opening and there  nasal borders are sharp and  inferior.
  • The nonmetric traits observed in the Asian ancestory includes  cranial traits, dental morphology, and cranial sutures.
  • Traits could be genetically passes from one generation ot another, or they could be enviromenatlly influenced.
  • The metric approach and non-metric approaches are effective methods used to identify the ancestry.
  • Metric method is  an accurate method because it is based on  quantitative nature.
  • The non-metric method is based on the cranium to determine ancestry.
  • It also includes the  assumption to differentiate the different groups. But it is a  qualitative method.
