ApoE or Apolipoprotein E is a protein that binds to several receptors, out of which LDL receptor is one which binds majorly. ApoE and LDL receptor interact and function together in transporting and catabolising cholestrol present in the blood. ApoE carries cholestrol from the blood stream to cells of liver, astrocytes etc. where they bind to the LDL receptor present on the surface of cells. The LDL receptors transfer the cholestrol into cells where it is utilised for various purposes.The lack of ApoE and LDL receptor would thus lead to hypercholestremia or increased levels of cholestrol in blood , which can in turn lead to several other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, parkinson's etc.
