Apoe protein is involved in the metaboilsm of fat in the body. It belongs to a family of fat binding proteins called apolipoproteins. In general it is present as a part of several classes of lipoprotein iclude LDL, IDL, VLDL and chylomicrons.

This is important for the clearance and catabolism of triglycerides rich lipoproteins. Apoe are significantly produced by liver and macrphages and involve in the cholesterol metabolism.

When the Apoe-/- nock out mice cannot produce Apoe, the catabolism of LDL, VLDL are decreased. This leads to more VLDL and less HDL in blood.
